How to Choose a Good Research Journal

The writer here tries to explain her understanding based on the first meeting of Academic Writing class with Asst. prof. Teddy Mantoro, PhD, MIEEE, MACM.
 


A. How to choose a good research journal based on the title;

1.The title should be formulated by Problem, Method, and Result. (Three variables)
2. Maximum 13 words

Example:

Increase the Accuracy of Tracking User Location Using Extreme Machine Learning.
        (Result)                               (Problem)                                  (Method)


B. How to choose a good research journal based on the abstract; There will be...

1. Field Establishment (research area). It is mostly as a lead in the abstract.
2. Problem. It is mostly started or followed by negation. Example: Un-, unfortunately, not, lack, difficult, etc.
3. Result / solution.
4. Contribution (Optional)
5. Evaluation / recommendation. (Optional)

Jump on Blocks!

Level : Children (2nd - 6th Elementary school)

Stage : Assessment

Things that you need:

1. Marker
2. Floor

How to apply:

Divide your students into two or three groups consist of 3/4 persons.

1 student will be a "Top writer", a person who writes on a piece of paper to report all the sentences that her/his friends made. 

Write down some articles, subjects, verbs, and prepositions on the floor based on the language focus that you already discussed. 

put some numbers for points. 

The other students will be the "sentence producers".

They will make sentences according to the subject and verbs on the floor that they step on.

When one student is producing the sentence, the "top writer" should write all the sentences that come up from their friends on a piece of paper.

Give your students time to produce as many as sentences. (it's about 10-15 minutes)

At the end, check their sentences from the "top writer". You have to count all the sentences and the points. The group who made a lot of correct sentences and get the highest point, will be the winner.

Snakes and Ladders

Level : Any Level

Stage : Assessment Stage

Things that you need:

1. Snakes and Ladders board/ paper
2. Written Questions in a piece of paper
3. Cards
4. Dice
5. Pawn

How to apply:

The objective of this game is to make students master certain language focus or some language focuses in a cheerful way.

The rule of this game is quite similar to the common Snakes and Ladders game, like; you have to throw the dice and point your pawn in a certain number according to the dice number. You can go up if your pawn step on the ladder and you can go down if your pawn step on the snake's head.

Here, when your students step on a certain number on the snakes and ladders board, they have to answer the question according to the number in the paper that you've prepared before. If they can answer the question, they can stand still on the number, but if they cannot answer it they have to move backward one step.

If there are two pawns on the same number, the new comer can "kick" the previous comer back to the start.

You may notice that there are some stars on the Snakes and Ladders board, if there is a pawn of your students step on it, they have to take a card that you've prepared. The cards contain "crazy" instructions that the student should do.

Tips:

1. Prepare the questions based on the materials or language focuses that you've already discussed. Example: Language focus --> Simple future tense. 

• Questions/ instructions: 
1. Make a sentence with simple future tense! (+) {positive sentence}
2. Make a sentence with simple future tense! (-) {negative sentence
• You can also give questions or instructions from the previous lesson

     2.  Prepare the "crazy" instructions to the cards for the one who step on the stars. Example:

• Touch your friends neck!
• Jump 10 times!
• Run around class 3 laps!
• Do something to your friend!
• Hug your friend!
